What is the license plate game?

The license plate game is a road trip spotting game: look for plates from different states, provinces and territories, and check off each new place you find. It gives everyone a reason to look out the window and learn a little geography along the way.

GeoPlates is a free license plate game app that keeps your checklist on your phone and colours in your map as you go. The letters and numbers do not matter. Only where the plate is from.

License plate game rules

The aim is to collect different places on real license plates. The state, province or territory counts; the registration letters and numbers do not.

  1. Choose your goal. Start with the 50 US states, add Washington, DC, or include Canada and Mexico. For a short drive, aim for five or ten different places.
  2. Spot a plate and read its home. A passenger calls out the place name. If it is too hard to read, wait for another plate.
  3. Mark each place once. Tap its plate in GeoPlates, or tick it on a paper checklist. Another Ontario plate still counts as the same place.
  4. Choose how long to play. Keep looking until the next stop, for the day, or across many trips. GeoPlates saves your collection and the date you first found each place.
  5. Count your different places. Ontario, Michigan, California and another Ontario plate give you three finds. Keep an eye out for somewhere new.

Playing with kids

Let one passenger spot plates, another read the names and someone else mark the finds. Younger children can ask for help; older children can find each place on the map. A shared goal keeps everyone involved.

Family challenge or friendly competition?

Work together on one collection, or print a sheet for each passenger and award one point per different place. Agree whether everyone who sees a plate can count it and whether parked cars count. These are paper-game house rules, rather than extra multiplayer modes in the app.

Passengers do the spotting and marking while the car is moving. Let the driver concentrate on driving.
