Recipe Cards FAQ

What size are the recipe cards?

Every card is 4×6 inches (landscape) — the classic recipe-box size. Each PDF is laid out with two cards per US-Letter (8.5×11) sheet and crop marks for clean trimming, and the cards are single-sided.

Of the three standard sizes, we recommend the middle one. A 4×6 card gives you 60% more writing room than a 3×5 without needing the bigger box, binder or sleeves that a 5×7 collection demands — which is why all 100 templates here use it. Compare 3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 recipe card sizes to see the same recipe written on all three.

How do I print them at the right size?

Print at 100% / “actual size” — turn off “fit to page” or “scale to fit” so the 4×6 size stays true — then cut along the crop marks. Because the cards are single-sided, there’s no double-sided alignment to wrestle with.

Can I print just one card, or use a different size?

Yes. Every pack also downloads as a ZIP of individual PNG images — one file per card. Download the PNG ZIP to print or edit one card individually. If you need a different standard size, use our dedicated 3×5 or 5×7 collection so the artwork and writing areas retain the correct proportions.

What card stock works best?

Go heavier than regular printer paper so the cards survive real kitchen use — roughly 65–110 lb cover (about 175–300 gsm). Heavier stock shrugs off spills, splatters, and years of handling.

Should I print in color or on cream / off-white stock?

The color designs pop on bright white. If you want a warmer, heirloom look — or you’re printing in bulk and want to save color ink — cream or off-white stock pairs nicely with the simpler designs. Both print fine; it’s a look preference.

Laser or inkjet — which printer is better for recipe cards?

For cards that live in a kitchen, laser is the safer bet — the toner is heat-fused to the page, so it won’t smear or run when it meets a splash or a wet hand, and it handles heavier card stock without curling. Inkjet wins for rich, vivid food photos, but the ink can smudge when wet unless you laminate. Mostly text with a small image → laser; photo-heavy → inkjet (and laminate).

How should I store and organize my printed cards?

A 4×6 recipe box with A–Z dividers is the classic setup — alphabetize by name, or group by category (mains, sides, desserts). Clear sleeves or a laminate keep your best-loved cards splatter-proof.

Can I edit the cards, or only print them?

They’re built to print and fill in by hand — which is what makes them perfect for passing down family recipes — but you can also type on them in most PDF editors before printing.

Where can I find free recipes or a free cookbook to fill them in?

The free Dinner123 app has a built-in cookbook with hundreds of recipes to browse, save, and plan your week around — no subscription. Discover a recipe in the app, then write the keepers onto a card.
