World Tour Rules

Courses

Golf Darts World Tour turns a dartboard into an 18-hole golf course inspired by the world’s most iconic courses. Throw up to three darts per hole and stop whenever you choose: only your last dart counts, and the lowest total wins. Golf Darts World Tour rules are essentially the same for standard and color-coded dartboards. Curious about other versions? See how to play golf darts the classic pub way, Dolf and more.

How do you play golf darts?

Golf Darts World Tour rules are outlined below.

  1. What’s the goal? Just like golf, the goal is to play 9 or 18 holes and end with the lowest score.
  2. What is a hole? A hole is a section/wedge of the dartboard designated by the outer number in the metal rim.
Wedge #1 = Hole #1: a cropped standard dartboard with the number 1 wedge outlined in blue and indicated by an arrow.

Holes 1-18 are the playing field.

Standard dartboard with Water labels and blue arrows pointing to the outer numbers 20 and 19.

Holes 19 and 20 represent water.

  3. Play order: All players or teams take turns aiming up to three darts at the first target, Hole 1, then move on to next target, Hole 2, and so on.
  4. Target: The hole players are aiming at on a given turn. Hitting the hole usually gives a score of 0 or better (negative), and missing the hole gives a score of +1 or worse. Positive numbers should be avoided.
  5. Number of darts: Up to three darts per player, per hole.
  6. Last dart counts: Each dart a player throws replaces the score of their previous dart, even if it’s worse. Players can choose to end their turn anytime, even after 1 dart, if they are satisfied with their score. The number of darts thrown does not matter.
  7. Who goes first: Choose a player or team to start on Hole 1. The player or team with the best score on the previous hole throws first on the next hole.

How do you score in golf darts?

You can throw up to three darts, stop anytime. Only your last dart counts.

Where your last dart lands gives you a score:

  • 0 is “par”, an ordinary result
  • NEGATIVE numbers are GOOD
  • POSITIVE numbers are BAD

Just like golf, each score has a nickname: “birdie”, “eagle”, etc – not necessary to memorize.

How do you keep score in golf darts?

Where the last dart lands is the score you record. For example, a par is 0. Par is never scored as a 3, 4, or a 5.

Players most often keep score in one of two ways:

  1. Write a running total on a dart chalkboard.
Golf Darts running totals on a dartboard chalkboard: GS at +3 and DH at minus 4.
Example score after 8 holes. DH is winning by 7.
    OR
  2. Filled-in Golf Darts Classic scorecard after eight holes: GS at +3 and DH at minus 4, with zero for both players on hole 8.
Example score after 8 holes. DH is winning by 7.

What are Par-3, Par-4 and Par-5 holes in golf darts?

Each hole is called a Par-3, Par-4 or Par-5.
Higher-par holes have more opportunities for better (lower) scores.

Watch out for the bogey hiding in the Par-3 !

How do you get a Hole-in-One in golf darts?

A Hole-in-One is hard to get in Golf Darts World Tour. It has to be the inner double bull to count; the outer single bull is a bogey.

Standard dartboard: Hole-in-One (double bull), Bogey +1 (single bull).Hole-in-One(double bull)Bogey +1(single bull)

The score you get for a Hole-in-One depends on the hole you are on. A Hole-in-One on a Par-3 is a great score, but not as good as a Hole-in-One on a Par-5.

Hole-in-One scores: Par-3, minus 2; Par-4, minus 3; Par-5, minus 4.PAR 3-2PAR 4-3PAR 5-4

How does a golf darts hole play out?

Should you keep a golf darts birdie or throw again?

On a Par-4, your first dart hits the center section (i.e. treble) of the hole you were aiming for: a birdie (−1). You can stop and keep that score. You can choose to “risk it” by throwing again for a better score – in this case an eagle or Hole-in-One.

So if you choose to throw again and your second dart hits a different hole, your score becomes a bogey (+1). The bogey replaces the birdie. You have one dart left to try to improve it, or you can choose to stop and accept the bogey as your final score on that hole.

How is a golf darts course laid out?

Standard dartboards are not color-coded. What’s the par of each hole?

There are 2 ways to determine the course layout of a dartboard, i.e. the pars of each hole.

  1. Choose a world course and download a free scorecard — this has a pre-set layout matching an iconic destination course. The scorecard contains the scoring diagram to make things easier.Popular courses: Olde Scottish, Georgian Sunset and Maritime Trail.
  2. Decide on your own layout. The player that starts calls out the par for that hole. This variation of play is made even easier when referring to the scoring diagram on the blank scorecard, which is also included in all scorecards. The player who wins the hole starts and decides the par for the next hole.

How do you win at golf darts?

The player or team with the lowest total score after the 18th Hole—or 9th Hole for a shorter game—wins.

How do you play golf darts in teams?

Can you play best ball in golf darts?

Teams of two or more play best ball. On each hole, only the team’s best (lowest) score counts.

That takes the pressure off. Once one teammate scores par (0), the team can’t do worse. The next player can throw all three darts going for a birdie (−1). If they miss and end on a bogey (+1), no harm done. The team still keeps the par.

The more players on your team – up to four players – the easier it is for your team to get better scores.

How are golf darts course records kept?

Keeping track of the course record makes Golf Darts World Tour even more fun and addictive!

We display all course records on the top of our dart chalkboard. We are currently playing on the color-coded dartboard of Golf Darts Classic.
